Solar Eclipse

The solar eclipse was so beautiful!  This isn’t an actual picture of it, and it doesn’t do it any justice, but if you weren’t  there you would never understand.

It is going to be hard, but I will do my best to describe it for you guys.

So, basically, at 12:50 we went outside to watch the eclipse.  The sun was about halfway covered by the moon when we got out there, so we had some time to wait. At around 12:55 it looked like there was a big gold banana in the sky through the eclipse glasses.

At around 12:59 there was only a little sliver of the sun left, and over the next three minutes the moon crept over the last of the sun.  At 1:03, when we could take the glasses off, it was so beautiful.  The moon was visible in the middle of the day, and if the clouds were gone we would have seen Mercury and Venus.

During totality, the sky was unlike anything before.  The moon was surrounded by the outermost layer of light from the sun that is normally invisible to the eye.  Around the moon there was a variety of colors.  Mostly was shades of blue.  At the top was a bright, bold purple.  The top a little to the left there was some red.  On the bottom a tiny to the left was some orange.

During totality the temperatures dropped.  The animals went to go to sleep, the nightime bugs came out, the night lights on the school buildings turned on, and everyone was looking at the sky.

This lasted for about 30 seconds, when the diamond ring started to appear again.  When the diamond ring came back, we had to put the eclipse glasses on as well.  For about five minutes he sun remained invisible behind the moon.   When you could see the sun again through the glasses it was amazing watching the sun come back from it’s hiding spot.  I guess you could say the sun finally learned how to play hide and seek.

When the sun slowly appeared again and the moon slowly moved out of the way it was really cool watching as it became visible again.  The temperature rose again and it didn’t seem like nighttime anymore.  An hour later it was amazing to go outside and take a peek at it.  It looked like someone took a bite out of it!

By the time it was over, people had wished they were the ones on the plane.  The ones that got to see the totality for 3 hours.   The ones who had a special job for helping the scientists study about eclipses.  Or at least I was.
